The Loss of Biodiversity

Animals and plants play a critical role in maintaining life on Earth, yet climate change and human activities continue to threaten ecosystems around the world. As temperatures shift and habitats change, many species are experiencing population declines, and some are even being pushed toward extinction. One well-known example is the passenger pigeon. Once estimated to have a population of 3–5 billion individuals and making up roughly 25–40% of all birds in the United States, the species was once one of the most abundant birds in the world. However, within just a few centuries, its population declined to zero, and the last known passenger pigeon died on September 1, 1914. This extinction was primarily caused by human activities, especially commercial hunting and large-scale deforestation.
Another example is Bachman’s warbler, a bird species that also became extinct due to habitat destruction, land clearing, and environmental pressures such as hurricanes. These examples demonstrate how human actions can permanently alter biodiversity.
Biodiversity is essential because ecosystems depend on complex interactions between plants, animals, and their environments. When species disappear, ecosystems become less stable and less capable of supporting life over time. Trees provide one of the clearest examples of this importance. Forests absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide and help regulate Earth’s climate by storing carbon and producing oxygen through photosynthesis. As deforestation increases, forests become less able to offset greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to rising global temperatures and accelerating climate change. Forest ecosystems are especially significant because they contain around 80% of terrestrial biodiversity and absorb billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. Pollinators are another essential part of maintaining biodiversity. They contribute to the reproduction of approximately 75% of global food crops and nearly 90% of flowering plant species. It is estimated that one out of every three bites of food consumed depends on pollination. However, pollinator populations continue to decline, with North America experiencing significant losses and butterfly populations decreasing substantially in recent decades.
Human activities—especially deforestation, habitat destruction, and greenhouse gas emissions—continue to place pressure on both plants and animals. Protecting biodiversity is not only about preserving nature; it is necessary for maintaining stable ecosystems and supporting human life in the future.
However, this problem is not impossible to address. Through collective action, innovation, and sustainable choices, we can reduce the impact of climate change and protect biodiversity. Even simple actions, such as planting trees, conserving habitats, and supporting environmental efforts, can contribute to meaningful change. If individuals, communities, and governments work together to develop and implement solutions, we can help restore ecosystems and create a more sustainable future for both people and wildlife.
