Human-induced Degenerative Diseases and Increased Pandemics/Epidemics or Superbugs

As countries become more developed and people begin living longer, new health challenges emerge that were previously less common. One of the major examples is the rise of degenerative and chronic diseases. These conditions may develop due to aging, lifestyle factors, environmental influences, or in some cases as side effects of medical treatment. Examples include neurological disorders and metabolic diseases. Development changes population patterns significantly. As countries gain access to improved healthcare, stronger infrastructure, better sanitation, and expanded opportunities for women in education and employment, death rates begin to decline and birth rates gradually slow. Families no longer need to have as many children because child survival rates increase and quality of life improves. Over time, population growth stabilizes and a larger aging population begins to form. This pattern is demonstrated through the Demographic Transition Model (DTM), which explains how population growth changes as countries develop. The Epidemic Transition Model (ETM) complements this by describing how dominant causes of disease shift throughout development. In the earlier stages of development, infectious diseases and poor living conditions are more common. As countries move into Stage 3 and Stage 4, chronic and degenerative diseases associated with aging and lifestyle become more prevalent. Some interpretations of Stage 5 suggest that highly connected and developed societies may also become increasingly vulnerable to emerging infectious diseases, pandemics, antibiotic resistance, and new disease strains often referred to as “superbugs.” The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated how quickly disease can spread in an increasingly globalized world. Greater global connectivity allows ideas, technology, goods, and people to move rapidly—but it also increases the speed at which viruses and infectious diseases can spread across populations. Global life expectancy has risen significantly and has reached approximately 70 years worldwide since 2014. At the same time, the prevalence of chronic and degenerative diseases has increased as populations age and countries continue to develop. Today, there are approximately 830 million people aged 65 and older worldwide, with larger concentrations in regions such as Japan and Europe. By 2054, the global population aged 60 and older is projected to reach approximately 1.7 billion people. Although advances in medicine have improved treatment and management for many diseases, aging populations and emerging health threats remain major global challenges. The rise of chronic illness, along with concerns about antibiotic resistance and future disease outbreaks, has the potential to place increasing pressure on healthcare systems and affect long-term population patterns.

These challenges are complex, but they are not impossible to address. Through scientific innovation, public health improvements, responsible healthcare practices, and international cooperation, societies can work toward reducing health risks and creating healthier futures for growing populations.
